A little over three years ago, we saw the publication of a game-changing document: the Chalk Stream Restoration Strategy. Led by one of our Vice Presidents, Charles Rangeley-Wilson, the strategy laid out a roadmap for improving the health of these rivers, which are some of the world's rarest wildlife habitats.
We, along with other environmental charities, contributed to the strategy's recommendations. Underpinning them all is one big wish: that the Government create overarching legal protections and priority status for chalk streams and their catchments, in order to drive investment in their restoration.
Since then, Charles and other river advocates have worked tirelessly to make those recommendations a reality. A Defra policy document, the Chalk Stream Recovery Pack, was slated for publication in 2023 - a promising step in the right direction. Sadly, the Government now appears to have shelved this crucial work.
Among the many who were dismayed to hear this news is Sophia Holloway. A member of the public who cares deeply about chalk streams, Sophia has started a petition that urges the Government to reconsider.
